Recoding Spots
Every spot has codes indicating it's "market", "client" and "product".
Trouble is, Network spots have different codes to yours, and such code differences get in the way of spot
matching. The same spot might have a product code of "X" in one system and a code of "XY" in the other, and
there's no good way for Tango to reliably guess that these two are the same.
So, you have to help Tango by "recoding" spots.
Spot Recoding
Tango lets you change a code of "X" to a code of "Y". All spots which had a code of "X" will now have a code of "Y". That's what we call "recoding" - turning one code into another.
Tango lets you recode Network spots OR agency spots OR both at the same time.
And you can recode three aspects of a spot: product code, client code and market code.
The goal of recoding is to have both "sides" (Agency side spots and Network side spots) have the same codes for product, client and market.
If we achieve that, then Tango can do matching correctly.
An Example
To get the idea, imagine this scenario: you have spots in your system with a market code of "NNSW" but the Network supplies spots coded as "Northern NSW". When you start out, spots can't be matched because they appear to be from different markets. Tango thinks: they have different codes, so they must be from different markets, and no matches can happen.
In such a case, Tango let's you either:
- recode your agency spots from "NNSW" to "Nothern NSW" so your spots use the same code as the network
spots.
- OR recode the network spots from "Northern NSW" to "NNSW" so that, again, both side use the same code:
"NNSW"
- OR you can even recode both sides: "NNSW" to "NN" and then "Northern NSW" to "NN". Now both sides will be using "NN".
The Recoding Screen
Press the "Recode" button and you'll see a Dialog Box divided down the middle into "Agency" and "Network" and tabs for Client, Market and Product.
In each tab, the codes listed in the "Current Code" column were those loaded from the files. Your job is
to (optionally) enter values into the "Recode As" column.
Notice that you can enter into the "Recode As" column in three ways:
- by simply typing in a new code
- by drag-and-dropping a code from elsewhere on the panel (make sure you select the source row before you
drag)
- by cut and paste - just right-mouse-press to get the cut/paste popup menu.
Also, be aware that you don't have to recode - you can leave a "Recode As" cell blank. If you do,
then nothing happens. All spots on that side will continue to have their current code, unchanged.
So, in our three scenario example above you could go to the "Market" tab and either:
- Recode "NNSW" to "Nothern NSW" on the agency side (leaving the Network side blank)
- OR recode "Northern NSW" to "NNSW" on the network side (leaving the Agency side blank)
- Or recode on both sides to "XYZ"
Saving Your Recodings
When you press the "Apply" button your codes will be saved and other users will be able to use them
immediately. If you press "Cancel" the changes you have made will be lost.
Advanced Recoding
The "NNSW" example above is a classic case of 1 to 1. There's one code on the Agency side (NNSW) to match with one code on the Network side (Northern NSW). That's what normally happens with Markets, but it might not be the case with client or product.
Sometimes, for reporting reasons, Agencies and/or networks have different structures in place for clients and products. One side might have a single client code, but the other side might have three.
Luckily, Tango can help here. You can enter the same recoding multiple times.
Let's say the agency has three client codes for the same client: "A", "B" and "C". But when the network supplies spots, they only have one "Z". That means, Tango can't match spots because they all use different client codes.
The solution is to recode "A" to "Z", "B" to "Z" and "C" to "Z" on the agency side. Now spots on both sides have a client code of "Z". But notice that we did it by recoding to "Z" multiple times.
